He completes a sculpture commissioned by the Cartier Foundation titled “Solex Ici et Là”.

1989 - 15 Fév. - Death of his Son

His first son, Yves Antonio Carlos, born on September 18th 1954, dies in a car accident in Saragossa, Spain.

1989 - March

Arman travels to Korea and Japan for the openings of his solo exhibitions.
A large scale sculpture entitled Millions of Miles is created in Chönan, South Korea. It is 65.5 feet (20 meters) high, created out of welded rear truck axles. It is the tallest of Arman’s sculptures to that date.

1989 - April

A group exhibition is scheduled from April to July, titled « Corps / Figures, la Figuration Humaine dans la Sculpture du XXéme Siècle » at Artcurial in Paris.
He completes a project that began in 1986 consisting of monochrome paintings.

1989 - May

He travels to Venice, Alexander, and Athens on a Mediterranean Sea cruise with other contemporary artists, art critics, gallery representatives on the MTS Odysseus.
A public sculpture entitled “Universalities of Wisdom” is completed in San Francisco. Arman participates to the Monte Carlo Sculpture Bienale.
He creates a new series of painting called Shooting Colors.

1989 - Oct. 6th - Yves César's Birth

Birth of Yves César, his sixth and last child, out of mariage with Carrole César.

1989 - Nov.

He receives the medal of the Legion d'Honneur from the French President, François Mitterand.
He prepares a project for "Mixografia" (a patented printing process) ar Los Angeles, California.
A large scale sculpture is scheduled to be installed in the Spring of 1990 in Osaka, Japan and another one is scheduled to be installed at a new hotel in South Korea.

Arman travels to the Far East for large scale sculpture projects.

1990 - Spring

He participates in ARCO Contemporain Exposition, Spain.
Swedish Gallery A.H. Grafik publishes « Monochrome Accumulation ». A catalog that lists all the paintings made for this project, with a foreword by Donald Kuspit.

1990 - June

Arman cancels his Retrospective exhibition for the opening of the Musée d'Art Moderne et d'Art Contemporain de Nice (MAMAC) scheduled for June 21, 1990 after anti-Semitic remarks made by Mr. Jacques Médecin, the mayor of Nice.
A large scale sculpture commissioned by BMW is completed, titled “Rêve De Calandres.”
He travels to Sweden to work on a new project, entitled Puristic Monochromes in collaboration with A.H. Grafik.
He begins a new series of serious of paintings called Under the Skin.

1990 - Été

The “Musée du Dessin et de l'Estampe de Gravelines », France presents Arman’s estampes and etchings from the 1950s to 1990. At the same time, the Catalogue Raisonné about the estampes is introduced (written by Jane Otmezguine and Marc Moreau, published by Marvel, Paris).
