His first museum retrospective in the United States “Selected Works 1958-74” is held at the La Jolla Museum of Contemporary Art, California. The exhibition tours throughout the United States, ending with a show at the Albright-Knox Museum in Buffalo, New York.

A retrospective of prints is held at Galerie de la Salle, St. Paul-de Vence, France.
He creates an environment reconstituting the front window of his first exhibition “Le Plein” at the XXXIXth Venice Biennale.

Arman works in a new studio on Canal Street, in lower Manhattan.

Arman starts to produce bronze pieces.

He travels several times to China where he visits ancient archaeological sites and artistic centers.

He travels to Moscow.

1980 - April - May

He creates freestanding sculptures of accumulated tools while working in Nagoya (Japan) and he exhibits them at the Galerie Valeur  (Nagoya).
A retrospective of his works is held at the Centre d'Art et de Culture in Flaine, France.

1981 - The year in brief

He gives up GO and spends less time on his African Art Collection. He creates wall relief sculptures made out of tools and utensils.
